Technical Parameters for Gowning Rooms
Gowning follows a sequence, from outside clothing to full cleanroom garments, with a rising cleanliness grade at each step. The number of stages and the grade of the final stage depend on the production area, which your design team and regulator define. The table shows a common pharmaceutical pattern.
| Stage | Typical purpose | Typical grade (EU) / class (ISO) | Typical features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry and change room | Remove outdoor clothes, wash hands | Grade D / ISO 8, or unclassified | Lockers, benches, hand wash, mirror |
| First gowning stage | Put on hair cover, first garment, cleanroom shoes | Grade D or C / ISO 8 or ISO 7 | Step-over bench, garment storage |
| Second gowning stage | Put on full gown, hood, gloves, mask | Grade C or B / ISO 7 or ISO 5 at rest | HEPA supply, interlocked door, mirror |
| Final stage into aseptic area | Last check, glove disinfection | Same grade as the room entered | Interlock, alarm, observation window |
| De-gowning room | Remove garments on exit | Often one grade lower | Separate exit, garment bins |
Design points:
- Separate flows: entry and exit are best separated, especially for Grade B, so that used garments never meet clean ones.
- Step-over bench: divides the floor into a shoe-side and a clean-side, so outside shoes do not enter clean zones.
- Interlocks: doors cannot open at the same time, with light or sound signals to show status.
- Pressure: the final stage is positive to the previous stage, often by 10–15 Pa.
- Size: a rough planning figure is about 1 to 1.5 m² per person at peak time, adjusted to the layout and shift pattern.
- No sinks in higher grades: hand washing belongs in the first stages only.
Cross-Border Delivery and Localized Construction Support
A gowning room is small, but it has many parts: panels, doors, interlocks, an Air Shower, HEPA boxes, windows and furniture. We deliver these as a coordinated kit, labeled by room and by position, so installation is clear even for crews who have not built one before.
- Flow planning: we review the headcount, shifts, garment type and entry and exit routes.
- Drawings: layout, door swing, bench, locker and Air Shower positions are agreed before production.
- Production and numbering: panels, doors and profiles are produced and labeled.
- Packing and shipping: flat-pack loading with protection, and documents with FOB, CFR or CIF terms.
- Installation support: manuals, wiring diagrams for interlocks, video guidance or a supervising engineer.
Local construction: the electrical work for interlocks and Air Showers is often the part that needs care. Power, signal cables and conduit routes should be planned before the walls are closed, and the electrical contractor should have our wiring diagrams in advance. The room should be cleaned and the HEPA filters installed only after all building work is complete.
After installation, the team should test interlock function, door closing, pressure differentials and airflow before the room is used. Local electrical and building rules apply, and your engineer remains responsible for approvals.
For larger plants, we suggest a short planning call between your quality lead, the electrical contractor and our engineer. Agreeing door swings, interlock logic, alarm signals and bench positions on one drawing prevents most site changes. Staged shipments can also be arranged when the building is handed over in phases.
Quality Control and Certification
Gowning rooms are checked in use as well as at handover. In pharmaceutical plants, operators are qualified by microbial sampling of gloves and gowns, and the room is monitored regularly. No wall panel or door is certified for gowning on its own, and we do not claim this.
| Control step | Inspection | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Incoming materials | Sheet, face, core, profiles, gaskets, glass | Known quality |
| Panel production | Dimensions, flatness, bonding, edge sealing | Tight, flush joints |
| Surface inspection | Scratches, bubbles, color, cleanability | Easy cleaning |
| Door and interlock | Gasket contact, interlock function, alarm | Reliable personnel control |
| Air Shower check | Fan, filter, nozzles, timer and interlock test | Ready for use |
| Packing | Count, labels, condition | Complete delivery |
Documents available: material specifications, factory inspection records, filter data, wiring diagrams and, where available, reports on fire or surface performance.
For regulated sites, we can support your qualification files with component data and drawings. Please tell us which documents your quality unit expects, so we can confirm what we can supply. Customer audits of our factory and sample approvals are welcome.
Quality teams often ask how a gowning room is checked and monitored. We explain the interlock tests, show typical inspection records and welcome factory visits or live video tours, where you can watch doors, Air Showers and panels being assembled and tested. Batch records are kept for each project, so later questions about a specific room can be traced to production.
We recommend agreeing on acceptance tests, such as interlock sequence and pressure checks, before handover.
After-Sales Service and Response Capability
Gowning rooms are the busiest rooms in the plant. Doors open hundreds of times a day, benches get bumped and interlocks run constantly. Our after-sales service focuses on keeping doors, seals and interlocks working, because a failure here stops the whole plant from starting its shift.
- Fast communication: technical questions answered in English by email, phone or messaging.
- Remote diagnosis: photos, videos and a description of the fault help us find the cause.
- Spare parts: door closers, hinges, gaskets, interlock controllers, sensors, locks, windows and Air Shower filters.
- Modification support: extra doors, benches, lockers or a second gowning line can be added.
- Engineer visits: by arrangement.
Typical problems:
| Observation | Possible cause | Suggested action |
|---|---|---|
| Both doors open together | Interlock fault | Check controller and sensors, repair at once |
| Door does not seal | Gasket wear, hinge settling | Replace gasket, adjust hinge |
| Air Shower weak airflow | Loaded or damaged filter | Replace filter, check fan |
| Pressure to next room drops | Door left open, leak | Check door closers and seals |
We suggest daily checks by the first shift and monthly inspection by maintenance.
Gowning rooms are best maintained with simple daily habits. Operators should report doors that stick, alarms that sound, loose benches or damaged mirrors, and maintenance teams should check gaskets and sensors every month. Sending us photos with the room name lets our engineers compare them with the project drawings.
Replacement parts are made to the original specification, so closing force and sealing match the existing doors. For urgent cases, we discuss the fastest shipping option and prepare documents in advance.
A small stock of gaskets, sensors and door closers at the site helps you act the same day. Our engineers can also join a video call with your maintenance team.
Commercial Terms, Warranty and Lifecycle Cost
The gowning room is a small part of the building cost but a large part of its daily running. A well-designed room speeds up entry, reduces contamination and lowers garment and cleaning cost, while a cramped or badly arranged room causes delays and errors every day.
| Item | Our approach |
|---|---|
| Quotation | Itemized by room and component, with drawings |
| Trade terms | FOB, CFR or CIF, defined in the quotation |
| Payment | Commonly a deposit with balance before shipment or against documents; final terms in the contract |
| Warranty | Defined by component group in the contract |
| Lead time | Given after drawing confirmation |
| Customization | Size, door layout, interlock type, Air Shower, windows |
Where cost is decided:
- Number of stages: each extra stage adds panels, doors, HEPA supply and interlocks.
- Air Shower: useful but not always needed, so check your risk assessment.
- Separate entry and exit: costs more space but improves control for higher grades.
- Size: too small a room creates queues, and too large a room wastes air.
Furniture, garments, laundry, hand-washing plumbing, HVAC, monitoring and permits are outside our supply unless agreed. Warranty exclusions are stated clearly in the contract.
When comparing quotations, ask each supplier to state door type, interlock type, Air Shower specification, panel material, windows and packing, not only price. Small differences in these items decide how reliable the room is in daily use.
We provide itemized quotations and can show alternatives, such as a simple two-stage room for Grade D areas and a full multi-stage suite for aseptic areas.
We are glad to explain every line of the quotation.
Real Factory Strength for Gowning Room Projects
Gowning rooms combine panels, doors, interlocks and Air Showers, so it helps when one manufacturer makes them. Pharma United Co., Ltd., founded in 2006, runs two factories in Kunshan and Qianjiang covering 20,000 m², with more than 60 staff. We are a manufacturer, not a trading company.
| Indicator | Information |
|---|---|
| Experience | 20+ years in cleanroom engineering |
| HPL cleanroom panels | About 250,000 m² per year; China's largest HPL cleanroom panel manufacturer |
| Container shipments | More than 1,000 forty-foot high-cube containers per year |
| Location | Kunshan, about 30 km from Shanghai |
| Product range | Panels, doors and windows, equipment, modular PODs, HEPA products |
| Service | Design, manufacture and installation support |
Why this helps gowning room buyers: we produce panels, doors, windows, Air Showers and Pass Boxes ourselves, so dimensions, interlocks and finishes are designed to match. This avoids the common problem of mixing parts from several suppliers.
Samples, references, factory visits and video tours are available on request. Our engineers answer technical questions directly.
Our designers prepare layouts and detail drawings, our engineers review interlock and interface details, and our production teams run dedicated lines for panels, doors, Air Showers and equipment. Export coordinators prepare packing and documents for shipments to many countries.
Customers in pharmaceutical, hospital, electronics and food fields return for new rooms and spare parts, and we can share photos and videos of completed rooms on request. Visitors are welcome at our factory by arrangement.
Our staff reply promptly and in plain language, and our designers can adapt standard layouts to your building and your process.
Gowning Room Construction FAQ
Q1. How many gowning stages do I need?
It depends on the grade of the production area. Aseptic Grade A and B areas normally need more stages than Grade D rooms. Your design team and regulator decide.
Q2. Do I need an Air Shower?
Not always. Many plants use a gowning room with an airlock, and air showers help at high-traffic points or for extra particle removal.
Q3. What is a step-over bench for?
It separates the outside-shoe side from the clean side, so people change footwear without stepping on the clean floor.
Q4. Why are interlocked doors used?
They prevent two doors from opening together, which keeps pressure and cleanliness stable.
Q5. How big should a gowning room be?
A rough planning figure is about 1 to 1.5 m² per person at peak time, adjusted to the layout.
Q6. Can you supply lockers and benches?
These are usually sourced from furniture specialists, and we coordinate dimensions and positions. Please tell us what you need.
Q7. How do I get a quotation?
Send your headcount, shifts, grade of the production area, layout and destination country.
Q8. Can the gowning room be extended later?
Yes. Modular panels allow extra stages or a second line to be added with limited disruption.
Q9. Do you offer samples?
Yes, samples of panels, joints and door gaskets can be sent for approval.
Our staff reply promptly and in plain language, and our designers can adapt standard layouts to your building and your process.
We are glad to explain every line of our quotation and to prepare alternative options if you need to adjust the budget.
