Technical Parameters for Buffer and Ante Rooms
Use of the terms depends on the guideline. In USP <797> sterile compounding, for example, an ante room leads to a buffer room that holds the hood. In other settings a buffer room is simply an airlock. Your standard and your regulator define the grades and pressures. The table gives common references.
| Setting | Typical sequence | Typical class and pressure |
|---|---|---|
| Sterile compounding (USP 797) | Ante room, buffer room, hood (primary engineering control) | Ante room ISO 8, buffer room ISO 7, hood ISO 5; positive pressure to adjacent unclassified space, about 5 Pa minimum |
| Hazardous drug compounding (USP 800) | Ante room, negative-pressure buffer room, containment hood | Ante room ISO 7; buffer room negative, about 2.5–7.5 Pa to adjacent areas |
| Pharmaceutical plant | Change room, buffer or airlock, classified room | Graded D to C to B, with about 10–15 Pa steps |
| Protective environment (immunocompromised patients) | Ante room, positive-pressure patient room | Positive to corridor, HEPA filtered supply |
| Airborne infection isolation | Ante room, negative-pressure patient room | Negative to corridor, exhaust handled as the code requires |
| BSL-3 laboratory | Ante room, negative-pressure lab | Stepped negative pressure, sealed envelope, interlocked doors |
Design points:
- Line of demarcation: a floor line or bench divides the less clean from the cleaner side of the ante room.
- Hand hygiene: sinks are acceptable in an ante room, but not in a USP buffer room.
- Interlocks: doors should not open together, with a visible pressure gauge for staff.
- Supplies: staging space and a Pass Box reduce door openings.
- Size: enough room for garbing and storage without crowding, so staff do not touch clean surfaces.
Cross-Border Delivery and Localized Construction Support
Buffer and ante rooms are usually part of a larger suite, and they must be completed before equipment such as hoods and monitors can be installed. We plan shipments room by room, labeled and numbered, so the contractor can build in the right order.
- Standard check: we confirm the guideline, room grades, pressures and the order of rooms.
- Drawings: layout, door swings, Pass Box positions and ceiling plans are agreed before production.
- Production and numbering: panels, doors, windows and profiles are produced and labeled.
- Packing and shipping: flat-pack loading with protection, and documents with FOB, CFR or CIF terms.
- Installation support: manuals, interlock wiring diagrams, video guidance or a supervising engineer.
Local construction: in hospitals, these rooms are often built inside occupied buildings. Modular panels assemble with little dust and noise, but work should be phased, with dust barriers and negative pressure in the work zone. Plumbing for sinks in the ante room and electrical work for interlocks and pressure monitors must be planned before the walls close.
After construction, a qualified certifier normally tests airflow, filter integrity, pressures and particle counts. Local building, health and pharmacy rules apply, and your engineer remains responsible for approvals.
For hospital projects, we suggest a short planning call between the pharmacy lead, the infection control team, the HVAC designer, the contractor and our engineer. Agreeing door positions, pressure arrows, pass box locations and sink positions on one drawing prevents most site changes. Staged shipments can also be arranged when the building is handed over in phases.
Quality Control and Certification
Ante and buffer rooms are certified as part of the suite, through measured airflow, pressure and particle counts. No wall panel or door is certified for compounding or isolation on its own, and we do not claim that. We check what we make and keep records for your files.
| Control step | Inspection | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Incoming materials | Sheet, face, core, profiles, gaskets, glass | Known quality |
| Panel production | Dimensions, flatness, bonding, edge sealing | Tight, flush joints |
| Surface inspection | Scratches, bubbles, color, cleanability | Easy disinfection |
| Door and interlock | Gasket contact, interlock function, alarm | Pressure stability |
| HEPA products | Factory efficiency records, visual check | Traceable filtration |
| Packing | Count, labels, condition | Complete delivery |
Documents available: material specifications, factory inspection records, filter data, wiring diagrams and, where available, reports on fire or surface performance.
Please tell us which guideline and which documents your authority expects. We will confirm what we can supply and will not promise anything that does not exist. Customer audits of our factory and sample approvals are welcome.
Pharmacy boards, hospital committees and consultants often ask for evidence about materials and tests. We explain how panels and doors are made, share inspection records and welcome factory visits or live video tours. Batch records are kept for each project, so later questions about a specific room can be traced to production.
We recommend agreeing on acceptance tests, such as pressure, interlock and seal checks, before handover.
Our staff reply promptly and in plain language, and our designers can adapt standard layouts to your building and your process.
After-Sales Service and Response Capability
In a pharmacy or isolation suite, a pressure alarm in the ante room can stop work, so repairs must be quick. We keep complete project records that let us supply matching parts and explain how the rooms were built.
- Fast communication: technical questions answered in English by email, phone or messaging.
- Remote diagnosis: photos, videos and pressure readings help us suggest causes.
- Spare parts: gaskets, hinges, closers, interlock parts, windows, lights and HEPA Filters.
- Modification support: new pass boxes, extra doors or extra rooms can be added with updated drawings.
- Engineer visits: by arrangement.
Typical problems:
| Observation | Possible cause | Suggested action |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure alarm | Door left open, gasket wear, filter loading | Check doors, replace gasket, check filter |
| Door will not close | Hinge settling, frame movement | Adjust hinge, check frame |
| Interlock fault | Sensor or controller failure | Test and replace parts |
| Surface damage | Cleaning agent or impact | Review agent, repair or replace panel |
We suggest daily checks by staff and monthly inspection by maintenance. Keep a small stock of gaskets and sensors on site.
Because the ante room is used all day, we suggest a short daily check by staff and a monthly check by maintenance, covering doors, gaskets, interlocks, pressure gauges and surfaces. Sending us photos and readings with the room name lets our engineers compare them with the project drawings and suggest a cause.
Replacement parts are made to the original specification, so closing force and sealing match the existing doors. For urgent cases, we discuss the fastest shipping option and prepare documents in advance.
Our engineers can also join a video call with your maintenance team to guide a repair.
Commercial Terms, Warranty and Lifecycle Cost
The ante and buffer rooms are small, but they sit at the center of daily workflow. A well-sized room with a clear route reduces errors, shortens garbing time and keeps pressure stable, while a cramped one causes delay and contamination risk.
| Item | Our approach |
|---|---|
| Quotation | Itemized by room and component, with drawings |
| Trade terms | FOB, CFR or CIF, defined in the quotation |
| Payment | Commonly a deposit with balance before shipment or against documents; final terms in the contract |
| Warranty | Defined by component group in the contract |
| Lead time | Given after drawing confirmation |
| Customization | Size, door layout, interlocks, Pass Box, windows |
Where cost is decided:
- Number of rooms: an ante room plus buffer room costs more than a single airlock but provides better control.
- Grade: each step up needs more HEPA coverage and tighter construction.
- Negative pressure rooms: exhaust handling and sealing add cost.
- Modular PODs: a complete suite can save time on small projects.
Hoods, cabinets, plumbing, HVAC, pressure monitoring and permits are outside our supply. Warranty exclusions are stated clearly in the contract.
When comparing quotations, ask each supplier to state panel type, door type, interlock type, Pass Box specification, windows and packing, not only price. Small differences in these items decide how reliable the suite is in daily use.
We provide itemized quotations and can show alternatives, such as a compact two-room suite for small pharmacies and a larger layout for outsourcing facilities.
We are glad to explain every line of the quotation.
Our staff reply promptly and in plain language, and our designers can adapt standard layouts to your building and your process.
Real Factory Strength for Buffer Room Projects

We are glad to explain every line of our quotation and to prepare alternative options if you need to adjust the budget.
Buffer & Ante Room Setup FAQ
Q1. What is the difference between an ante room and a buffer room?
In USP 797, the ante room is the first area where staff garb and stage supplies, and the buffer room holds the hood. In other settings, a buffer room may simply be an airlock between two zones.
Q2. Can a sink be placed in the buffer room?
Not in a USP buffer room. Sinks are allowed in the ante room, away from the buffer room door.
Q3. What pressure should these rooms have?
It depends on the guideline. A common pattern is positive pressure for sterile areas and negative for hazardous drugs or infectious patients, with typical steps of a few to 15 Pa.
Q4. Do I need an Air Shower?
Not usually in pharmacy suites. It may be used in plants with high traffic or higher particle control needs.
Q5. Can I add a pass box?
Yes. A Pass Box reduces door openings and keeps supplies moving without crossing the barrier.
Q6. Are your panels USP approved?
No building product is approved alone. Our panels are smooth, sealed and cleanable, and support your compliance work.
Q7. How do I get a quotation?
Send your guideline, room sizes, class targets and destination country.
Q8. Can I build a compact suite in a small pharmacy?
Yes. Modular panels and PODs are often used for small pharmacies, but the size must still allow garbing, staging and the hood.
Q9. Do you offer samples?
Yes, samples of panels and gaskets can be sent for approval.
